China Philately Vol. II

"AMERICAN PHILATELIST" December 2002

Journal of the American Philatelic Society

by Joe Hahn

About 1,000 philatelic covers, cards, envelopes, etc., that were mailed between 1870 and 1912 are described, evaluated, and illustrated (many at their original size). The first sixty pages deal with the "Large Dragon" issue and provide marvelous information on what exists. For example, all three of the U.S. Taylor and Large Dragon covers I am aware of are illustrated. This is just one example of the wealth of information presented in one place. As mentioned, everything is pictured, with a few color illustrations that make a collector's heart beat faster and salivary glands work overtime. However, one of the truly important sections is the listing of all major cancellations in a comprehensive index. This includes everything from Austrian cancellations to U.S. cancellations. As a logbook of known covers from China for this period this work is an invaluable reference. If you have a cover from this period not shown here, I suspect the authors would like to hear from you.
